September 27, 2017

Dear Pleasant Valley Primary Families,

We are off to a great start this 2017-18 school year! I want to thank the community and volunteers that have assisted us these first few weeks of school.  That includes all the volunteers who helped at last week's Picture Day and Fun Run scheduled for September 29, 2017.  Thank you for your time, assistance and understanding.  Remember that we welcome you at our school.  We are a team in your child's education.

September is Attendance Awareness Month.  Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of the school year with excused and/or unexcused absences.  Being chronically absent is related to lower academic and social-emotional outcomes at the end of elementary school.  We are here to help and please don't hesitate to call us for assistance with your child's attendance. We are working on a goal of 100% of students at Pleasant Valley Primary attending 90% of the time.

In September, we worked on creating welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs. We reminded students to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition we reminded students of our school expectations. (Be responsible, respectful, and always safe, value the community and be an on task learner).

Last week we began teaching the Second Steps social skills program which includes lessons that support these behaviors.

This month, our school-wide theme is Skills for Learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. We will be teaching, re-teaching and reinforcing these skills, which help students be successful learners.

Students are also working to complete the fall i-Ready assessment in reading and mathematics. Below, you will find information on the assessment and how we will be using it in the classroom.

What is i-Ready? i-Ready helps us assess your child’s individual needs and monitor their progress throughout the school year. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive test that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s performance. Its purpose is not to give your child a score or grade but instead to determine where they need the most support.

We are also working on building students’ independent reading stamina. We know that the amount of independent reading students do significantly influences their level of reading performance. Together, we reviewed, refined, and explicitly defined what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like to read independently. We ask that you also set daily goals for reading independently at home increasing the number of minutes throughout the year. It is important we help students get into the habit of reading every day.

A special thanks to the Pleasant Valley staff for their efforts in getting school off to a great start. We look forward to working with you to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of all of our students.

Thanks,

Mike

NEW ONLINE PARENT VOLUNTEER FORM!

Parents ~ In an effort to streamline the volunteer application process, we recently made the switch from paper forms to an online form.  Please click on this link access it:

We encourage you to volunteer your time in our schools. Volunteers help out in all of our schools - from kindergarten to high school - taking on a variety of roles to help our students succeed. You don’t need teaching or professional experience to volunteer. The most important qualification is a genuine interest in helping our students and teachers maximize their potential.

What volunteers do:

  • Mentor students
  • Chaperone activities
  • Assist teachers
  • Help out in the office, and more!

Recruitment and placement of volunteers is managed at the school building level. Community volunteers frequently connect with a school that is close to their home or place of work or choose an age level of students they prefer. Please visit the volunteering page on the district website to review the approval process and submit your application.
