Grateful for our community

Hello,

As we enter the Holiday season, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who help make Pleasant Valley Primary an amazing place to be. We are a community with many gifts and talents, which we share daily with one another and most importantly, our students. From the classrooms, to our living rooms and all points in-between, our collective efforts to raise the whole child are filled with passion, commitment and a willingness to make decisions that may be hard in the present, but will have a positive and lasting influence in the future for all.

Overcrowding Committee

At the request of the Battle Ground Public Schools Board of Directors and superintendent, a committee of 30 parents, staff and community members met over six weeks in the fall of 2018 to examine data and develop options to address overcrowding and continued growth in district schools. I encourage to visit the Battle Ground Public Schools website  for details. Community input forums will be scheduled providing parents an opportunity to learn more about the various options being considered by the Board.

Second Step — Social Emotional Learning

This month, our school wide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:

• Stop — Use your signal
• Name your feeling
• Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk

These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.

Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You’ll be receiving Home Links via the school newsletter that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down.
